Moton Museum Receives a Grant from The Wachovia Foundation for Educational Outreach

Key in development of the Robert Russa Moton Museum is a strong educational outreach program.  With a recent grant from The Wachovia Foundation for $10,000, educational outreach programming has been enhanced.

“The mission at The Wachovia Foundation is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life and make a positive difference.  We see the Moton Museum’s educational outreach vital in accomplishing these goals for Southside Virginia,” said Wachovia Community Affairs Manager Juan Austin.

The Moton Museum educational outreach will begin with contacts to area school officials to collect input for the preparation of customized resources for the public and private schools in the 14 localities.  The resources will include teacher professional development, curriculum guides, and instructional materials supporting the integrated instruction of the relevant historical period as aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

“As a former resident and educator of the region, I am pleased to be involved in the planning for educational outreach services to be delivered through the Moton Museum,” said Moton Museum Education Consultant Helen Stiff-Williams.  “It is gratifying to be positioned to contribute to the vision of the heroic leaders who sought to change and improve upon the American educational system.”

The mission of the Moton Museum is to preserve and positively interpret the history of Civil Rights in Education, specifically as it relates to Prince Edward County and the role its citizens played in America’s struggle to move from a segregated to an integrated society.
